Hydroxychloroquine brand namePlaquenil is a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD approved for adults with RA. It is often given in combination with methotrexate and sulfasalazine a treatment known as triple therapy, to help slow RA disease progression for patients who do not get relief from methotrexate therapy alone. 1,2 Plaquenil’s long half-life in the body can cause irreversible and progressive damage, Dr. Fung said. Similarly, one study reported that 16 women who’d taken hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, or a combination of the agents, showed no improvement seven years after stopping drug therapy, and progression occurred in six of the cases. 2 This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of the combination of methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine with leflunomide in the treatment of active rheumatoid arthritis over a period of 12 weeks. A significant change in disease activity score was seen in both the groups at 6 and 12 weeks after initiating therapy with the investigative drugs.
