Dry AMD occurs when small, age-related deposits called drusen form at the basement of the retina, or the retinal pigment epithelial layer. These age-related changes effect up to 11 million people in the United States. Drusen are small yellow deposits of fatty proteins lipids that accumulate under the retina. The retina is a thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the inside of the eye, near the optic nerve. The drusen-like deposits were located in a ring-shaped distribution between the retinal pigment epithelium and Bruch's membrane, with the majority of eyes having macular sparing. In patients with glomerulonephritis, the drusen-like deposits were more numerous than in those systemic lupus erythematosus patients without renal involvement.

It is imperative that patients and physicians are aware of and watch for this drug’s ocular side effects. Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine is rare, but even if the medication is discontinued, vision loss may be irreversible and may continue to progress.

  7. Well I had my regular ophthalmology appointment today and the doc said he sees drusen in my eye. He said that its a pre-sign to macular degeneration which can lead to partial blindness. Because of my age I'll be 32 this month it is very rare. Thing is he didn't see it back in January when I went for my baseline appt before starting Plaq.

Jul 07, 2017 Dry macular degeneration is caused by cell function decline in the center of the retina, resulting in blurred vision. Yellow deposits, called Drusen, appear in the macula. If the drusen continue to grow, it can cause tissue in the macula to become damaged and die. Wet Macular degeneration is the growth of abnormal blood vessels behind the macula. Drusen are small yellow or white deposits that form in the retina or on the optic nerve head. They are accumulations of extracellular material that build up in the eye. The detection of a few drusen is normal with aging eyes, with most people over the age of 40 having at least some drusen. Drusen. The appearance of drusen — yellow deposits — in the retina indicates the development of early-stage dry macular degeneration left. As the condition progresses to the advanced stage right, the drusen get larger, bleeding occurs and the light-sensitive cells that make up the macula become scarred.
