Plaquenil is also known by its drug name, Hydroxychloroquine. Plaquenil may be prescribed at a low dose for maintenance, or at a high dose to control acute flare-ups. Plaquenil is a disease-modifying drug originally developed to treat malaria. Plaquenil is believed to work by interfering in communication between the cells of the immune system. Plaquenil is a slow-acting drug, meaning that it can take up to 6 months to experience the full benefits of this medication, but it is possible for symptoms to improve in as few as 1 or 2 months. Plaquenil and other antimalarials are the key to controlling lupus long-term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives.

Taking hydroxychloroquine long-term or at high doses may cause irreversible damage to the retina of your eye. Hydroxychloroquine is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus.

INTRODUCTION Hydroxychloroquine HCQ is an alkalinizing lysosomatropic drug that accumulates in lysosomes where it inhibits some important functions by increasing the pH. HCQ has proved to be effective in a number of autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus SLE. Donald E. Thomas Jr. MD, FACR, FACP, a practicing rheumatologist in Greenbelt, Md. and author of The Lupus Encyclopedia, regularly prescribes Plaquenil to his lupus patients. “We know that people with lupus who take their Plaquenil regularly are much more likely to live a long, normal life compared with those who don’t,” he says. Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are anti-malarial medicines that can also be effective for people with rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Both drugs have an anti-inflammatory effect and can be helpful in treating joint inflammation and skin manifestations of lupus.
