But then I read about Plaquenil and its side effects and really freaked out. Would appreciate any insight if you have it if you've ever been on this drug and any comments you care to share.

Dec 12, 2019 Losing Hair on Plaquenil The 5 Possibilities Hydroxychloroquine also known by its popular brand name Plaquenil is an oral medication that is commonly used to treat a variety of autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus, dermatomyositis, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s and many other con Hydroxychloroquine is a type of anti-inflammatory medication used to treat some types of hair loss such as lichen planopilaris and sometimes discoid lupus and frontal fibrosing alopecia. It is classified as an anti malarial pill because certain closely related medications i.e. chloroquine are actually used to treat malaria infections in some. Plaquenil is supposed to help with hair loss, not contribute to it. I would also suggest giving it some more time especially since the side effects of plaquenil are supposed to lessen after a few months of use.

He suggested my complex autoimmune disease along with my hypothyroidism (which is being monitored and medicated) are most likely the cause (and genetics, of course, like duh….). Best, (name deleted) hi there- Good to hear from you. My dermatologist had suggested Rogaine but my rheum said I'll be stuck on it for life (and it's expensive) and it only works "less than 60% of the time" according to its own website.

  6. The Alopecia is reversible when you discontinue taking Plaquenil. Just be patient and maybe get a shampoo containing Minoxidil to help it along. Use a soft bristled hair brush to stimulate your scalp. Brushing lightly and often won’t cause any hair to fall out that wasn’t going to anyway and it helps with hair regrowing.

For the last 18 months, my hair has been thinning. Then my doctor found I had lupus. He will put me on Plaquenil soon, which he says may help the hair grow back. I have read frequent comments online that Plaquenil causes hair loss. Yes, Plaquenil can cause alopecia or hair loss. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites. Parasites that cause malaria typically enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia. Dec 13, 2012 Growing Back that Gorgeous Head of Hair A friend wrote me to ask my advice about her thinning hair. As you can imagine, losing your hair is never easy, and when you're a woman is devastating.
